Upstate NY.
Road trippin’ to upstate NY was a blast! Didn't do much; ate, talked, listened to music and repeated. So guys, let me tell ya how cool Yannick’s granddad is. First, call him, Peter, not granddad or pop pop, just Peter. You can imagine my discomfort especially when I first met him because where I come from it’s Mister, Sir or Uncle even if they aren’t your uncle.
Second, he is a truly gifted artist and I’m talking LEVELS of giftedness! Like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, the Johannesburg Art Foundation in South Africa, the Industrial Bank of Japan in Hong Kong and then some, kind of levels. His work makes me slow down, focus, search for and ponder it. Truly divine stuff.
Third, he likes Kendrick Lamar!!! So before the trip up Yannick and I chatted about what music we should share with him. Anderson .Paak and KAYTRANADA get honorable mentions, but we settled on K. Dot. Over beers, Yannick put on "To Pimp a Butterfly" and wow he loved every bit of it! It was like a meeting of the minds and I've never witnessed something like it before. Simpatico.
This was a new experience for me. A new kind of Black one too! Listening to Kendrick with my husband and Peter illuminates the fact that great music is transcendent. It doesn’t know demographics only that it wants to fulfill its purpose of being heard and hopefully appreciated. Makes me wonder about how much we all lean on each other for new experiences, consciously and subconsciously.
PS. If you haven't listened to TPAB I hope it blesses your ears soon enough and only when you're ready. It's a solid classic and I think a voice for our generation.
